Mercedes-Benz . How to Look for Wear or Cracks on Belts in a Chevy ImpalaThe Chevy Impala has been one of the longest running car lines in American history. If you're one of the many Impala owners who like to do their own maintenance checks, make sure you inspect the drive belts that run your engine components. Chevy recommends inspecting these belts every 30,000 miles to keep your car running at its best. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Step by Step : 1 Let your engine cool down, if you've been driving your Chevy Impala. It's wise to wait at least 30 minutes to allow the engine enough time to cool before you start your inspection. 2 Pop the hood of your Chevy Impala. Prop it open and look for the drive belts. Newer Impalas will only have one serpentine belt, while older models may have separate belts running the engine components. You can locate the belts near the water pump, alternator, air conditioning compressor or power steering pump (classic cars may not have all this equipment). 3 Take a look at the belts and search for any kind of fraying, cracking or tearing of the belts. All of these are signs that a belt needs replacing. A "healthy" belt will have a slight texture to it, like fabric. 4 Use your hands to feel along the entire length of the belts in your Chevy Impala. This may include crawling underneath the vehicle to inpsect the parts you can't see or feel from inside the engine compartment. If a belt feels glossy or smooth, that means the belt is worn and needs replacing. You should be able to feel the natural texture of the belt, if it's in good shape. 5 Check for any oil on the belts. If you find any, you could have an oil leak, in which case, you not only need to replace the belt, but you also need to locate the leak and fix it. 6 Close the hood and consider your inspection. If you think any of the belts need replacing, you can do it yourself or take your Chevy Impala to a mechanic. In vehicles with multiple belts, consider replacing them all at once, even if they aren't all showing signs of wear. ResourcesReplacement belts for 1959-2007 Chevy Impalas.
Mercedes-Benz . How to Look for Wear or Cracks on Belts in a Chevy SilveradoThe Chevy Silverado series includes the 1500, 2500 and 3500. If you own one of these rugged, reliable trucks, it's wise to include inspecting the drive belts in your routine maintenance checks. Drive belts run different engine components and keep your truck operating at its best. Chevy recommends performing these inspections every 60,000 miles. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Step by Step : 1 Allow your Chevy Silverado to cool down, if you've been driving it within the last 30 minutes. To avoid burning yourself, wait until the engine cools completely before you get started. 2 Open the hood of your Chevy Silverado and prop it up. There are either one or two belts to look for, depending on which engine type and model year you own. Look for the belt or belts near the alternator, air conditioning compressor and water pump. Trucks without an air conditioner, generally only have one belt, but trucks with air may have one or two belts. 3 Inspect the surface of the belts visually. Look for any fraying, cracks, gouges or debris stuck in the texture of the belt. If you see any debris, try to remove it. If you notice any abnormalities in the belt itself, it's time to replace it. 4 Feel along the belts of your Chevy Silverado with your hands. Each belt should have a slight texture to it; if it feels smooth or glossy, that means the belt is worn and needs replacing. Also, if you feel any oil on the belt, replace it right away and look around for an oil leak of some kind. 5 Try to inspect as much of the length of the belts as possible. You may have to slide under the truck to get a visual on the underside of the components and their corresponding belts. 6 Close the hood of your Chevy Silverado and consider your findings. Remember, if there is any damage whatsoever to one of the belts, or if the texture of the belt is worn and smooth, replace it right away. *line. If you neglect to do so, you run the risk of draining all the fluid out of the master cylinder and drawing air into the lines from the top. Now, that isn't fatal — it simply means that you have to go back and bleed your master cylinder until you suck the air out of that end of the system — but who needs the extra work? If you goof and have to bleed the master cylinder, it's the same deal as bleeding your brakes (friend and all). Just bleed it at the point where the brake lines attach to the cylinder, or at the master cylinder bleeder nozzle, if you have one (see Figure 18-16). 10. Repeat these steps with each brake until the air is out of each brake line, remembering to add brake fluid to the master cylinder after you bleed each brake. 11. 868

The brake pedal should no longer feel spongy when you depress it. If it does, check the master cylinder again to be sure that it's full and try bleeding the brakes one more time (this situation isn't unusual, and it doesn't take as long as it sounds). If you know that no air is left in the lines and the brakes still don't feel right, you may need a new master cylinder. You should definitely consider installing it yourself — at an auto class. All it involves is disconnecting the old master cylinder (a bolt or two and the hoses leading to the brake lines), removing it without spilling brake fluid on anything painted, installing the new one, filling it with brake fluid, and bleeding it. If the job seems like too much of a hassle, have a professional do the work. You shouldn't have to pay for much labor, and if you choose a brake shop wisely, the whole deal shouldn't cost too much. Whatever you do, just be sure that, when the job is finished, they (or you) bleed the brakes and the master cylinder to get all the air out of the lines. .Chapter 18: Being a Buddy to Your Brakes and Bearings !? (\2 Figure 18-16: Bleeding a master cylinder: If you have a bleeder nozzle, use the hose and jar method (A). If not, bleed the cylinder at the brake line connections (B). Back in the 1970s, I had Tweety Bird's master cylinder replaced for about $60. (It would cost much more now.) Later, I helped a friend replace a master cylinder with a rebuilt one. The rebuilt master cylinder cost about half of what I'd paid for a new one, and there were no labor charges (naturally). What are your time and trouble worth to you? Adjusting Hour Parking Brake Mercedes-Benz . Who owns the car with the reg p115loc?
Nissan Maxima. * These instructions for adjusting your parking brake work only if you have drum brakes on your rear wheels. If you have a manual transmission, you may have a transmission-type parking brake, which should be adjusted pro fessionally and parking brakes on rear-wheel disc brakes should be left to professionals, too. Your service manual may tell you which kind you have, or you can crawl under the vehicle and see for yourself. (Chapter 10 describes both integral and transmission-type parking brakes and shows you what they look like.) Because most people have integral parking brakes, that's the type I deal with in this section. Figure 18-17 shows you several types of integral parking brakes. Mercedes-Benz .
